Looking for outflows from brown dwarfs

چکیده

First evidences of IR excess and disk mass accretion (strong Hα emission) around brown dwarfs seem to indicate the existence of circumstellar disks around these sub-stellar objects. Nothing is known at the present time about outflows which potentially might be launched from brown dwarfs, although jets are typically associated with the accretion in standard T Tauri star disks. In this paper we calculate the Hα emission of internal working surfaces produced by a radiative jet in a neutral and in a photoionized environment as a function of the jet parameters (the ejection velocity vj , shock velocity vs, mass loss rate Ṁ and radius rj of the jet) and we provide estimates of the Hα luminosity for the parameters of “standard” Herbig-Haro (HH) jets from T Tauri stars and for the parameters expected for jets from BDs. Interestingly, we find that while the mass loss rates associated with jets from BDs are found to be two orders of magnitude lower than the mass loss rates associated with “standard” HH jets (from T Tauri stars), their velocities are likely to be similar. Based on our calculations, we discuss the conditions in which jets from BDs can be detected and we conclude that the Hα luminosities of internal working surfaces of jets from BDs in a photoionized environment should have only one order of magnitude lower than the Hα luminosities of T Tauri jets in a neutral environment. Chapter 1 Searching for Brown Dwarf Outflows

As outflow activity in low mass protostars is strongly connected to accretion it is reasonable to expect accreting brown dwarfs to also be driving outflows. In the last three years we have searched for brown dwarf outflows using high quality optical spectra obtained with UVES on the VLT and the technique of spectro-astrometry. To date five brown dwarf outflows have been discovered. Here the met...

The formation of brown dwarfs

We review five mechanisms for forming brown dwarfs: (i) turbulent fragmentation of molecular clouds, producing very low-mass prestellar cores by shock compression; (ii) collapse and fragmentation of more massive prestellar cores; (iii) disc fragmentation; (iv) premature ejection of protostellar embryos from their natal cores; and (v) photo-erosion of pre-existing cores overrun by HII regions. T...

Models of Planets and Brown Dwarfs in Mira Winds

We present numerical hydrodynamical models of the effects of planets or brown dwarfs orbiting within the extended atmosphere and wind formation zone of Mira variables. We find time-dependent wake dynamics and episodic accretion phenomena which may give rise to observable optical events and affect SiO maser emission. Subject headings: stars: planetary systems stars: winds, outflows stars: variab...

Brown dwarf formation by binary disruption

Context. The principal mechanism by which brown dwarfs form, and its relation to the formation of higher-mass (i.e. hydrogenburning) stars, is poorly understood. Aims. We advocate a new model for the formation of brown dwarfs. Methods. In this model, brown dwarfs are initially binary companions, formed by gravitational fragmentation of the outer parts (R >∼ 100 AU) of protostellar discs around ...
